Manchester United register interest in a flying full-back who has been tipped to become a European star, while a Red Devils man receives an exit proposal – both in the latest Euro Paper Talk.
MAN UTD FOLLOWING PORTUGAL FULL-BACK
Manchester United are following the progress of Benfica left-back Nuno Tavares as interest in his services hots up, according to a report.
The 20-year-old earned a promotion from the club’s B team last summer and has since grown in stature.
He made 11 Liga NOS appearances in his breakthrough season last term but has already racked up nine outings in the Portuguese top flight this campaign.
As such, his prominent rise has attracted interest from across Europe, but mainly in Italy.
Gazzetta dello Sport (via Sport Witness) claims that Napoli and Roma are already in a tussle for his signature.
However, United are also following the situation closely. The report does not state, though, whether the Red Devils have a genuine interest in the player.
United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has Luke Shaw, October signing Alex Telles and Brandon Williams as options at left-back. But United’s transfer approach of late has been to source the world’s most promising talent.
Indeed, the Red Devils recently added exciting teenage wingers Amad Diallo and Facundo Pellistri to their ranks.
In any case, an in-the-know ‘market operator’ has given his verdict on Tavares.
Cesar Boaventura said (via Il Napoli Online): “Fast player, one of the fastest players in the whole Portuguese league. He’s young. Maybe he’s not a player ready for a big one.
“But he could be in the future. Within a couple of years. He can become one of the best in Europe.
“This player can play in any club in Europe. But right now he can’t. He has to learn and grow. Right now I don’t think United want to take him. Nor that Benfica want to sell him in January.”
Tavares, who has scored one goal and assisted seven others in 33 Benfica appearances, has also picked up two appearances for Portugal’s Under-21 side.
