Ed Woodward has prioritised the signing on a new centre-backing next summer with three names in the frame, while Memphis Depay has revealed why his move to Barcelona fell through, according to Friday’s Euro Paper Talk.
THREE NAMES ON UNITED CB WISHLIST
Manchester United will make signing a central defender their priority next summer, with three European-based stars on their radar.
RB Leipzig’s Dayot Upamecano, Real Madrid stalwart Raphael Varane and Napoli star Kalidou Koulibaly are on their list of targets, according to reports on Friday.
The Red Devils brought in four new players on deadline day. But they failed to address their glaring need for a centre-back.
Despite performing well defensively in the second half of last season, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men have looked all over the place at the back so far this term.
They conceded three times at home to Crystal Palace and twice against Brighton. United were then humiliated in a 6-1 loss to Tottenham at Old Trafford last weekend.
The club spent £80million on Harry Maguire last summer but there have been major question marks over his partnerships with Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly.
The Athletic reports that United were made aware of Burnley’s James Tarkowski over the summer, while they also looked at France international Upamecano and Senegal star Koulibaly.
However, a deal never materialised and they will now make the signing on a top-class central defender their priority for the summer of 2021, rather than in January. That is due to the fact that they will have to pay a higher premium in the new year, when the football world knows they are desperate for a player in that position.
But United face missing out on transfer targets Upamecano and Varane if they fail to qualify for the Champions League, with both players only interested in playing in Europe’s top competition.
While United failed to sign a new centre-back, they were also unable to offload Marcos Rojo and Phil Jones.
Some pundits even suggested that the club sold their best defender when they allowed Chris Smalling to join Roma on permanent deal.
