Chris Smalling TEAMtalk

Tottenham make contact with Manchester United about the uncertain future of a loan star, while Manchester City prepare a massive contract for a striker – all in the latest Euro Paper Talk.

TOTTENHAM ASK ABOUT SMALLING

Tottenham and Everton have asked about the availability of Roma’s on-loan Manchester United defender Chris Smalling, according to reports.

Smalling, who was told he would receive limited game time under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer last summer, has become a fan favourite in Rome after impressing throughout the campaign for the Serie A side.

Various reports over the past few months have claimed that United are open to selling the Englishman for the right price, while the Red Devils could also look to bring him back into the fold next season.

According to Italian outlet Corrierre dello Sport, however, Smalling’s chances of staying at Roma have been complicated by the club’s 2-1 defeat to Atalanta on Saturday, which left Paulo Fonseca’s side six points off the Champions League places.

It is claimed that without top European football next season, it will take more than €40million in total to work through a permanent transfer, which would be too much for a team playing Europa League football.

Amid the uncertainty surrounding Smalling’s future, the source adds that Tottenham and Everton have made contact with United and the defender’s agent about a possible summer move.

It is said that either side could easily guarantee Smalling a higher salary than he would be offered by Roma.

For now, however, Smalling is solely focused on staying in Italy and his preference is a permanent transfer to the Serie A side.
