Euro Paper Talk: Two Man Utd transfers implode with third deal now in jeopardy; Tottenham lodge cash-plus-player offer

Man Utd manager Erik ten Hag

A £42m Man Utd signing is in doubt after two potential exits were blocked for wildly contrasting reasons, while Tottenham have lodged a cash-plus-player offer and Leeds Utd’s best players are wanted by two of the biggest clubs around – all in Friday’s Euro Paper Talk.

DEFENDER TRANSFER DEVELOPMENTS AT MAN UTD

Erik ten Hag has blocked a defender exit, though with Harry Maguire also putting his foot down, a £42m move for Kim Min-jae is now in flux.

Additions at Old Trafford are wanted at goalkeeper, centre-half, central midfield and centre-forward this summer. In other words, Man Utd hope to upgrade the entire spine of their team.

A move for Napoli’s Kim Min-jae has been heavily speculated, with Fabrizio Romano recently labelling the South Korean as United’s “main” and “top” defensive target.

The 26-year-old can be signed via a release clause worth around £42m that activates for a two-week period on July 1. It had been anticipated Kim would take Harry Maguire’s place in the squad, with the England international out of favour at present.

Tottenham and Aston Villa had registered interest in Maguire, per the Telegraph and Football Insider respectively. However, according to a fresh update from talkSPORT, Maguire is digging his heels in.

They state Maguire is ‘reluctant’ to leave Man Utd despite the fact he’s no better than fifth choice at present. Lisandro Martinez, Raphael Varane, Victor Lindelof and even left-back Luke Shaw are all favoured at centre-half by Ten Hag.

It’s acknowledged Ten Hag wants to sell Maguire to fund a move for Kim, though Maguire ‘wants to stay at United and fight for his position’.

Maguire is under contract until 2025 and as such, if he refuses to leave, Man Utd cannot force him.

Victor Lindelof going nowhere either

Elsewhere, German outlet BILD report another defensive exit has been derailed, though this time by Ten Hag’s own hand.

Via Sport Witness, it’s revealed Eintracht Frankfurt had lined Lindelof up as their successor to Evan Ndicka who is set to join Roma.

However, Lindelof has earned the trust of Ten Hag who has vetoed the move and told Frankfurt they have ‘no chance’ of signing the Sweden captain.

With Lindelof going nowhere and Maguire determined to stay, a move for Kim Min-jae is now under a cloud.

With an addition at goalkeeper, Mason Mount and an expensive centre-forward all wanted, United may be wise to abandon their plans for a new centre-back for the time being.

TOTTENHAM TABLE CASH-PLUS-PLAYER OFFER

Tottenham have offered winger Bryan Gil to Sevilla as part of a cash-plus-player bid for goalkeeper Yassine Bounou. Gil was loaned to Sevilla last season, while Bounou would be the replacement for Hugo Lloris who wants a fresh challenge. The proposal is understood to have been rejected, with Sevilla favouring an outright sale of Bounou. (Vamos Mi Sevilla)
