Everton are inching closer to pulling off a major coup after a Real Madrid superstar’s medical was pencilled in for next week, according to reports.

The Toffees have been conspicuous by their relative inaction during the transfer window thus far.

Several familiar faces including Leighton Baines and Morgan Schneiderlin left the club in July. Yet no first-team arrivals have materialised to date.

With manager Carlo Ancelotti now entering his first full season at the helm, the pressure is on to improve on their lowly 12th-placed finish last season.

One sure fire way to bolster their chances is in the transfer market. As such, the club have moved another step closer to bringing a global superstar to Goodison Park.

Real Madrid playmaker James Rodriguez became the subject of Everton interest last week. His connection with Ancelotti having played under him at Real and Bayern Munich was clear.

Now, those reports have been vindicated after The Express (citing talkSPORT) claimed the Colombian will ‘undergo a medical at Everton next week.’

At 29, Rodriguez still has plenty to offer, but has been deemed surplus to requirements by Zinedine Zidane at The Bernabeu.

The  issue of financing such a deal will be remedied by acquiring Rodriguez on a year-long loan deal. That is despite Rodriguez having just 12 months remaining on his current contract.

His potential acquisition could kickstart Everton’s summer business. Deals for Napoli midfielder Allan and Watford enforcer Abdoulaye Doucouré are also speculated to be in the works.
