Man Utd veteran offered escape route as two Prem rivals show interest

Sergio Romero Manchester United Rochdale TEAMtalk

Sergio Romero has been offered an escape route from Manchester United, as Everton are reportedly interested in the goalkeeper.

Romero has proven himself to be a more than capable backup since joining them in 2015. However, he has not made a Premier League appearance in either of the past two seasons.

The Argentine’s chances of first team football have reduced even further after Dean Henderson signed a new contract at Old Trafford. Henderson is expected to push David De Gea for the number one spot.

Therefore, Romero could fall to third in the pecking order. With his role as Argentina’s number one recently coming under question, that will spell further bad news for him.

However, he could have the chance to resurrect his career elsewhere in the Premier League. According to the Mirror, Everton are interested in signing the 33-year-old.

Jordan Pickford has failed to convince Carlo Ancelotti since the Italian took charge of the club midway through last season. Hence, Ancelotti is on the lookout for another option.

Romero has the experience that would make him a strong option for Everton. And Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is unlikely to stand in his way if a suitable offer comes in.

Ancelotti wants Everton to show ambition in the transfer market, and is also close to securing a deal to reunite him with Napoli midfielder Allan. James Rodriguez of Real Madrid is another target.

Leeds another option for Romero

The Mirror add that Leeds United are also interested in Romero. Marcelo Bielsa wants another goalkeeper after guiding Leeds to promotion.

Another option for Leeds, though, is Arsenal’s Emiliano Martinez. The Argentinian’s situation at Arsenal is still unclear, potentially giving Leeds an opportunity to sign him.

They would have to beat off competition from Aston Villa and a number of others to do so, though.
