Ross Barkley’s future is more uncertain than ever after the midfielder did not travel with the rest of the squad for their pre-season tour, officially due to injury.
The England international’s time at Everton seemed to be drawing to a close once he refused to sign a new contract after entering the last 12 months of his current deal.
Manager Ronald Koeman threatened to sell the Liverpool-born star should he not sign a contract, and has since added depth to his side with Davy Klaassen and Wayne Rooney’s arrivals increasing competition for Barkley’s spot in the team.
And the Merseyside club’s pursuit of Swansea playmaker Gylfi Sigurdsson could spell the end for the 23-year-old who is apparently receiving treatment for a groin injury.
Barkley reportedly wants to leave Goodison Park in order to revive his England career, with Tottenham consistently linked with a move for him.
His last cap for England came over a year ago when he made an appearance from the bench against Australia in the build-up to Euro 2016.
Also missing from Everton’s tour of Tanzania is Ramiro Funes Mori, who is still recovering from a knee injury sustained last season, and goalkeepers Joel Robles and Jordan Pickford.
