Arsenal have made a bid for Brentford goalkeeper David Raya, we understand.
The 24-year-old only joined The Bees last summer from Blackburn Rovers – but has impressed.
Arsenal also have his former Brentford goalkeeping coach Inaki Cana at the club, who has given him a glowing reference.
Now Arsenal have made a move for Raya as they look to replace number two Emi Martinez – who is set to be sold, with Aston Villa leading the chase.
Martinez was left out of the squad for Arsenal’s opening game of the Premier League season. That’s despite him impressing in the Community Shield recently and towards the end of the previous campaign.
Reports emerged recently that Arsenal are expecting a third bid from Villa for Martinez. The Argentine has also been linked with Leeds.
The BBC now report that Martinez is undergoing a medical with Villa ahead of a £20m move. And we understand Raya could replace him at Arsenal.
Raya played in all 46 of Brentford’s Championship games last season, as well as three play-off matches. He kept 16 clean sheets, more than anyone else in the division.
The Spaniard has spent his entire professional career in England. He also previously spent time on loan at Southport from Blackburn, whom he joined in 2012.
Raya appears keen to move to Arsenal, with reports this week claiming he could even hand in a transfer request.
Joining Arsenal would give Raya his first taste of top flight football. He remains under contract with Brentford until 2023.
