Derby County have made a move for Sunderland striker Joel Asoro – and they hope to beat Arsenal to his signature, according to TEAMtalk sources.

The Gunners have tried to Swedish starlet Asoro this summer along with fellow countryman Benjamin Mbunga-Kimpioka, who is also part of the Stadium of Light youth set-up.

TEAMtalk understands Arsenal are still keen on the pair, but new Derby boss Frank Lampard is hoping the prospect of first-team action under him at Pride Park could win the day.

Asoro, 19, has one-year left on his current deal at Sunderland and he has already told the Championship he will not be signing a new contract.

The Sunderland Echo claimed the Gunners were lining up a £5million bid for Asoro and Kimpioka.

And the player himself confirmed Arsenal’s interest in him last summer.

“People were a little shocked because I have played very little first-team football,” Asoro told the Daily Express.

I’ve heard a little bit, but if I think about it too much, it becomes ‘what if, what if.’ I try not to think about it too much.

“It came as a shock. It is clear clubs contact each other and stuff, but it’s my agent in charge of it. I try to focus on my football.”

Asoro, who was interesting Newcastle scouts in April, joined Sunderland in 2015 from Swedish outfit Brommapojkarna.
