Ipswich Town are ready to make a move for former Manchester United defender Axel Tuanzebe, TEAMtalk understands.

The 25-year-old centre-half is a free agent after being released by Manchester United earlier this summer upon the expiration of his contract at Old Trafford.

The talented defender, who joined United at the age of eight, captained the club at all levels, but made just 37 first-team appearances between 2017 and 2021. And having undergone a series of loans during his time at the club, ranging from Napoli to Stoke, it came as no surprise when he was released at the end of his deal.

Sheffield United have been strongly linked with a move for Tuanzebe as Paul Heckingbottom’s side prepare for their return to the Premier League.

But sources have told TEAMtalk that Championship new boys Ipswich are also ready to join the hunt for the DR Congo born star.

Tuanzebe is highly regarded by Tractor Boys boss Kieran McKenna having worked with the him during his time as a coach at Manchester United. And they hope the presence of McKenna could be enough to persuade the once-capped former England U21 defender to make the move to Portman Road.

Tuanzebe has seen his progress hampered by a number of injury problems and he made only four appearances during a loan spell at Stoke City during the second half of last season.

Ipswich are on the hunt for reinforcements in the backline as they seek to make an impact in the Championship this season after gaining promotion from League One.
