Exclusive: Man Utd flabbergasted by hefty Brentford price for Rico Henry as Ten Hag finds left-back solution

Rico Henry of Brentford is wanted by Manchester United

Rico Henry of Brentford is wanted by Manchester United

Brentford’s decision to place a sizeable £30m price tag on Rico Henry has warded off potential transfer interest from Manchester United, TEAMtalk understands.

Henry has emerged as one of United’s targets as they look to bring in a new left-back before the close of the transfer window after losing Luke Shaw to injury.

Shaw is facing a lengthy spell out with a muscular injury while Tyrell Malacia is also sidelined due to injury. And with Brandon Williams leaving on loan for Ipswich and with young star Alvaro Fernandez given the green light to move to LaLiga side Granada, United find themselves short of options at left-back.

As a result, Henry has emerged as an option for United along with the likes of Chelsea’s Marc Cucurella, Sergio Reguilon of Tottenham and Barcelona defender Marcos Alonso.

Brentford ace Henry has impressed for Brentford since joining the club from Walsall in 2016 helping the Bees win promotion to the Premier League and establish themselves in the top flight.

However, Thomas Frank’s side are determined to keep hold of the 26-year-old and have valueed the former England U20 international at around the £30m mark, which has priced him out of United’s range so late in the window.

Henry still has another three years to run on his contract at Brentford and the West London club are under no pressure to sell the full-back.

Man Utd turn focus to Nicolas Tagliafico

Another left-back link for United in Alonso has also quickly run its course for Ten Hag. That’s after the former Chelsea man rejected the offer of a two-year deal at Old Trafford in favour of staying to fight for his place in the Barcelona squad.

United did, however, get the green light to pursue a deal for Chelsea’s Cucurella. The Spaniard has struggled to find his top form at Stamford Bridge following a £65m move from Brighton last summer. And with Mauricio Pochettino willing to offload the one-time capped Spain full-back, a move to Old Trafford certainly ticked a lot of boxes.

However, United would need to pay the Blues a £8m loan fee, while the coverage of his salary for the season would have pushed his price up to £15m. Ultimately, that move was also decided as too costly for the Red Devils.

A solution, however, is in sights for Ten Hag.

And reports on Tuesday lunchtime claims that enquiries to Lyon for Nicolas Tagliafico have seen a breakthrough reached.

To that end, the Ligue 1 side have put a modest €6m (£5.1m) price on the head of the 30-year-old.

With that price to United’s liking, the Red Devils now look likely to put their focus into securing the signing of the World Cup winner.

The 49-times capped Argentina international’s prospective move to Old Trafford would also see him link up again with Ten Hag. The Dutchman managed the left-back during their time together at Ajax, reaching the Champions League semi-finals and winning three Eredivisie titles.
