Sources: Middlesbrough lead Hull in race for Newcastle keeper Karl Darlow after Carrick decides on top target

Karl Darlow and Jamaal Lascelles of Newcastle

Middlesbrough are ahead of Hull City in the chase for Newcastle United goalkeeper Karl Darlow, TEAMtalk understands.

Darlow has been on Newcastle’s books since August 2014, when the Magpies paid £7million to sign both him and defender Jamaal Lascelles. Darlow has gone on to make 100 appearances for the Magpies, keeping 25 clean sheets in that time.

The Englishman was Martin Dubravka’s backup during the 2021-22 season. However, both keepers fell down the pecking order when Nick Pope swapped Burnley for Newcastle last summer.

Darlow resultantly joined Hull on loan for the second half of last season. He made a god impression during his 12 outings for the club and Hull are therefore keen to sign the shot-stopper on a permanent basis.

However, they are at risk of losing out on Darlow to fellow Championship club Middlesbrough. TEAMtalk understands Michael Carrick has made Darlow his top target as he hunts a new keeper ahead of next season.

Last season, Boro could rely on USA international Zack Steffen. But the loanee has now returned to parent club Manchester City, leaving a gap in Carrick’s squad.

TEAMtalk has been told Newcastle are open to offers for Darlow as they are aiming to trim their squad down in the summer. Indeed, they are well stocked in the goalkeeping department, with Pope the confirmed number one and Dubravka his deputy. Plus, discussions are ongoing with Loris Karius over a longer contract for the former Liverpool man.

Newcastle keeper wants out and Boro look set to pounce

Darlow, 32, is eager to play regular first-team football at this stage of his career and Carrick is ready to offer him that opportunity. The coach, who was nominated for the Championship Manager of the Season award, is looking to build a squad which is capable of challenging for promotion to the Premier League again next term.

Meanwhile, a Liverpool flop could surprisingly return to England this summer by signing for Newcastle, according to reports.
