EXCLUSIVE: Saha names Man Utd trio who owe Solskjaer everything

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer TEAMtalk

Former Manchester United striker Louis Saha believes three of the club’s leading lights will be thanking manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for getting their careers back on track.

Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial struggled to make their mark during Jose Mourinho’s reign as United manager, while Mason Greenwood has emerged as a player of real potential under the guidance of Solskjaer.

In an exclusive interview with TEAMtalk, Saha suggests the progress of United’s front three is evidence of the progress being made at United ahead of a crucial week that includes a Champions League game against Paris Saint-Germain and a Premier League clash with Chelsea.

“It has not been a great start to the season for United, but three players, in particular, will be the first say they owe a lot to the manager,” Saha told us at a BT Sport event.

“Rashford will say thank you to Ole. Greenwood will say thank you and Martial will say thank you because he has helped them to become better players in the last year.

“They have all developed at a good pace since Solskjaer came in as manager and we have to remember the quality of some of the performances we saw last season as they finished third in the Premier League.

“Most people said they would not qualify for the Champions League last season and they were doubting Ole, but they are playing Paris Saint-Germain this week and it reminds us that progress has been made.”

Saha went on to suggest the timescale on Solskjaer bringing the glory days back to United may not be as long as many pessimists have suggested.

“I don’t think we need to wait two years for this United team to have success because it can be sooner than that, but it is hard to recreate what we had when I was at the club and they were winning every season,” he added.

“The Premier League has changed since my time as a United player and there are so many more clubs with real ambition now.

Success around the corner

“Tottenham are there, so are Arsenal, Chelsea are spending so much money and we have just come out of transfer window where we had £1billion spent by the Premier League clubs.

“This is a tough league to be successful in and Ole is expected to bring success to United when so many managers have failed in recent years.

“We also have to remember that we don’t always understand what happens behind the scenes at a club. Maybe they has been an attachment to one agent and that has been a factor in why things have been hard in the transfer market. But there are several reasons why the team are not playing as the fans would expect at the moment.

“I still believe there is enough quality in that squad to have a successful season and when we see Liverpool and Manchester City struggling at the start of this season it reminds us that every team can stumble and you cannot make judgements on a manager after a few matches in a season.”
