EXCLUSIVE: Blackburn veteran set to snub MLS for new deal

Stewart Downing is set to be offered a new deal by Blackburn to extend his illustrious career by at least one more season, we can reveal.

The 35-year-old former England international joined the club last summer after leaving his hometown club Middlesbrough for a second time.

Downing has proven to be hugely popular and a valuable member of Tony Mowbray’s Blackburn squad and he is set to be rewarded for his form.

Downing has started over 30 games, and although there has been interest from America with Major League Soccer, he is set to commit to another season at Ewood Park.

Meanwhile, the summer transfer deadline for EFL clubs to sign players has been pushed back to the end of August, it has been agreed in principle.

The decision, which will bring Championship clubs into line with League One, League Two and Premier League clubs, will be subject to a process to formally adopt the change into EFL regulations.

That process will begin in due course, and would mean the deadline for all EFL transfer activity this summer being September 1, with August 31 a Bank Holiday. Read more…
