Warning from Favre as Dortmund boss signals end of Man Utd’s Sancho hopes

Jadon Sancho, Lucien Favre

Manchester United’s efforts to sign Jadon Sancho appear over for now, at least, after a strong message from Borussia Dortmund boss Lucien Favre.

United have made Sancho their number one target this summer. However, the Red Devils have missed the deadline to sign him that Dortmund imposed.

The Bundesliga club wanted his future sorted out before their pre-season camp began last week. But as of yet, United have not made an official offer for the winger.

Nevertheless, Old Trafford chiefs remain confident of pursuing a deal for Sancho. While Dortmund’s deadline has passed, the transfer window remains open until October.

Therefore, Sancho would be ready to leave if United made a “realistic offer”, according to reports on Monday.

But Dortmund continue to insist that the 20-year-old will not be on the move.

Furthermore, the Bundesliga side’s CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke on Tuesday cast further doubt on United’s pursuit.

“We weren’t in a situation where we had to sell at any cost,” he said of the Sancho situation (via Manchester Evening News). “Clubs noticed that too.”

With United’s hopes seemingly on the drift, they are reported to have made contact with the agent of a Juventus attacker.

In a further blow to their hopes, Favre has spoken of his delight that the saga seems over.

In addition, he has warned the player he has much to learn before he seals a move elsewhere.

“It is important that he stays with us,” Favre told German publication Der Westen. “That is of course also important for the team.”

Favre also sees plenty of room for improvement with the player as he added: “Jadon Sancho is of course a very good player. But he must also have in mind that he still has a lot to learn.

“He needs to have better control of the ball, to do more headed flick-ons and to improve his defending.

“He can’t just stop running and stand still for 10 minutes and then suddenly do something for the next ten minutes. ‘This applies to everyone else as well.”

United urged to ditch Sancho and move for Harry Kane

Paul Merson, meanwhile, has warned United that they cannot win the league if they spend all their transfer budget on Sancho.

Merson thinks they would be better off spending that money on a proven striker instead.

“Manchester United should forget Jadon Sancho and sign Harry Kane instead – it would make them title contenders,” Merson told the Daily Star.

“With Sancho, it’s a transfer saga that’s dragging on now, and I keep on weighing it up thinking: ‘Is this what United really need?’

“They’ve got Mason Greenwood, who’s going to be a star. Marcus Rashford is only going to get better and better.

“But while Anthony Martial lets nobody down, I think they need an out and out centre forward.

“With Sancho, where is everyone going to play? Do they leave Greenwood out?

“I just think with £100m, why don’t you go and get Kane from Tottenham?”
