Rio Ferdinand has admitted that Chelsea star Kai Havertz reminds him of former Manchester United team-mate Dimitar Berbatov.

Havertz has endured a mixed start to life at Stamford Bridge after signing for big money last summer. The German arrived as the Blues’ most expensive acquisition at over £70million and had a solid first few months. However, he suffered badly with coronavirus, which set him back for a lengthy period.

As such, he has taken time to refocus, but there are signs that he is beginning to find his feet again.

Havertz scored both goals in Chelsea’s 2-0 win over Fulham last Saturday, before notching an assist in Wednesday’s 2-0 victory over Real Madrid which sent the Blues to the Champions League final.

Speaking to BT Sport, Ferdinand – who has previously compared Havertz to Berbatov – could not resist doing so again after his performance in Chelsea’s 3-1 aggregate win.

“He reminds me of Berbatov, a player I played with at Manchester United,” Ferdinand said. “He’s got that lazy swagger at times and that nonchalance about him.

The guy is just so smooth man. The game doesn’t quicken up around him.

“The game slows down to his pace, he gets things done. I think he will grow into a really important player for Chelsea.”

As well as his goal contributions, Havertz is beginning to show his fitness.

The 21-year-old has now put in two successive 90-minute stints, only the second time he has done so since January; however, it is the second time in a month.

Michael Owen added on the midfielder, who has been playing further forward: “I like Havertz. Some people hit the ground running when they come to the Premier League, he’s needed a bit of time but he’s a great asset.

“Not many players can do what he does. He’s going to be very good for this football club, I just think he needs time.”

Chelsea could have won handsomely

As well as Havertz, Timo Werner – Chelsea‘s big striker signing last summer who has largely failed to impress – continued his resurgence with a goal against Madrid.

He has now scored two goals in four matches, the other winning three Premier League points against West Ham.

However, on Wednesday, the Blues could have finished up with a better aggregate scoreline of 3-1.

Ferdinand said: “They could have won this game by five or six goals. They were fantastic.

“They play quick and are brutal in those transitions. They’re finishing wasn’t great on the night but they got the job done.

“Real Madrid looked tired tonight, they looked like an old team. Chelsea did it with some authority.

“They were the stronger, better team all over the park. ‘This is a strong group with character. They will be a problem for Manchester City in the final. I can’t wait.”

The all-English final will be contested on May 29.
