Ferdinand: Kane needs to ask himself serious questions about ambition

Rio Ferdinand has said that Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane must ask serious questions about his own ambitions following his side’s 7-2 hammering by Bayern Munich.

Spurs suffered their heaviest home defeat in their history on Tuesday evening courtesy of four goals from Serge Gnabry, a Robert Lewandowski brace and Joshua Kimmich’s opener.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side were on terms with the German champions for 35 minutes with Kane getting on the scoresheet, but the end result leaves Tottenham third in Group B.

Speaking to BT Sport after the game, former Manchester United defender Ferdinand said that Kane must look at how serious he is about winning silverware.

“[The result] leads me to look at Harry Kane,” the pundit said. “What are you in the game for? Are you in the game to be a one club man or to win trophies? Do Spurs look like a team capable of winning trophies?

“I don’t think so. They were a better team a couple of years ago. Leeds is a similar example, I was maybe a year or two younger but I was in a team at a Champions League semi-final, nearly won the league, but I thought I had a better chance elsewhere and I had the opportunity to go.

“I made a very quick decision to go and win trophies. Harry Kane is probably thinking about it and having those questions. They need answering soon. He’s 26 and you only have a small window of opportunity, they come and go very quickly.”

Elsewhere, Pochettino said he was keen to hold a serious inquest into where his side’s season is going wrong so far.
