Rio Ferdinand urges Man Utd star to quit club despite Solskjaer plan

Rio Ferdinand believes that Jesse Lingard should try and make his loan switch at West Ham into a permanent one this summer.

The midfielder has made an impresive start to life in London, having joined the Hammers in January.

Lingard scored twice on his debut in an away win over Aston Villa and starred again as the high-flying Hammers cruised a 3-0 win over Sheffield United on Monday evening.

The England international needed game time, after falling out of favour with Red Devils boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. So far, West Ham looks to be the perfect fit.

To that end, Ferdinand feels that Lingard should look to move to the London Stadium permanently.

“What’s his ambition here, beyond this season, what is he [Lingard] looking to do?” Ferdinand told BT Sport.

“If West Ham don’t put a bid in to buy him at the end of this loan I think this loan has to be seen as a failure.

“That’s got to be his aim. To get a bid from West Ham and other clubs to take him out of Man United.

Jesse Lingard could give Gareth Southgate a headache

Jesse Lingard could give Gareth Southgate a headache

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says Jesse Lingard could give England boss Gareth Southgate a selection dilemma after the midfielder scored twice on his West Ham debut against Aston Villa.

“Because I don’t see him going back to Man United and really affecting that squad now. I think they’ve moved past him with the players they’ve recruited, he doesn’t feature, hasn’t done for so long.”

Lingard discussed his motivation behind the move this week, stating that he was never given a chance to cement a place in Solskjaer’s side.

United not giving up on Lingard

However, despite Ferdinand’s comments, it apprears that United still have a plan in place for the 28-year-old.

Despite Ferdinand’s comments, however, the Sunday People claimed over the weekend that Lingard would be welcomed back at the end of the season.

Jesse Lingard West Ham

Veteran star Juan Mata is seemingly on his way at the end of his contract this summer. That will give Lingard the chance to work his way back into Solskjaer’s plans.

Solskjaer said of the player’s temporary switch to West Ham: “We want Jesse to come back here revitalised and having shown at West Ham how good a player he is, of course.

“I just want him to go there and enjoy himself, show how good a player he is and come back. He a Man United player through and through.”

The report in the People added that Lingard is still valued highly at Old Trafford. His contract runs out in 2022, meaning it may represent better value keeping him as back-up than selling him.

Lingard might have other ideas, however, if he keeps on producing match-winning displays with the Hammers.
