Ferguson lauds his Man Utd signing ’emerging’ as huge Solskjaer player

Manchester United legend Sir Alex Ferguson feels overjoyed to see fellow Scotsman Scott McTominay “emerging” as a key Red Devils influence.
The 24-year-old made his debut under Jose Mourinho’s stewardship at the end of the 2017/18 season. Since then, he has grown in stature and gone onto forge a vital role in midfield. Indeed, he has already racked up 127 appearances and, despite operating as a defensive midfielder, heh as a penchant for attacking.
In fact, he played as a striker as a youth player when club great Ferguson was at the helm.
This season, McTominay has made 43 games and speaking to the Scottish FA, Ferguson – who left in 2013 – hailed the midfielder’s growing influence on manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
“McTominay is now emerging as one of Man United’s big players,” the 79-year-old said.
“When you watch Man Utd pick a team for a big game, McTominay is in it.
“Good character, great trainer, I know a little bit about the boy.”
Indeed, Ferguson was the man to bring McTominay to Old Trafford as a youngster, already seeing exciting signs.

Scott McTominay: I'm happy to play anywhere
Scott McTominay says Scotland need to focus on building their confidence, and reveals he is happy to play in either defence or midfield for Steve Clarke.
As such, the managerial great compared McTominay to former United star Darren Fletcher.
“I signed him when he was seven or eight. He was actually a centre-forward as a kid. He has sprouted, a little bit like Darren (Fletcher) when he first came,” Ferguson added.
“McTominay is a similar type as Darren, long, lanky, good winner of the ball, good turn of pace going forward, great attitude to the game.
“It’s really rewarding for me to see a Scot coming through.”
McTominay part of budding Scotland squad
The Red Devils midfielder has also forged a key role on the international stage.
He has made 22 caps for Scotland since his debut in March 2018 and Ferguson is happy to watch his progression alongside some of his country’s other top stars.
“They have been playing quite well. I think it’s the old story, the scoring of goals,” Ferguson said.

“Their performance level has been very good, I have been impressed.
“I look at the midfield players and I think they are as good as anyone, players playing in England.
“And [Kieran] Tierney has been fantastic at Arsenal, absolutely fantastic, [Andy] Robertson the last two years at Liverpool has been unbelievable.”
