Sir Alex Ferguson offers simple message to Liverpool after title win

Liverpool legend Sir Kenny Dalglish says Manchester United legend Sir Alex Ferguson has offered his “congratulations” to the Reds after their Premier League title win.

Liverpool clinched their first league title in 30 years on Thursday after Chelsea’s defeat of Manchester City.

The title is the Merseyside club’s 19th in the top division, putting them one behind United‘s record of 20.

Indeed, Ferguson was responsible for 13 Premier League titles, the first in 1993.

And after Liverpool ended their drought, Dalglish revealed he has received a message from Ferguson.

“He contacted us to say congratulations by the modern medium,” Dalglish said (via The Guardian).

“You go through the older generation – Fergie at Manchester United, Brian Kidd, Mike Summerbee; all the old foes who went through football at the same time as us – and at the end of the year you sent a letter of congratulations to say well done. That continues through.

“You may be rivals but to have the intelligence so that you are magnanimous enough to send in a letter saying congratulations.

“The people who you’ve been competing with all your life in football, they would wish it was themselves who won, it but they are proud to pay homage to other people as well.”

Ferguson succeeded in ending Liverpool’s dominance of English football after arriving from Aberdeen in 1986.

However, since the Scotsman’s departure in 2013, Liverpool have overtaken the Red Devils for most major honours. Jurgen Klopp has taken his side to 48 trophies, with United on 45.
