Key Liverpool man doubtful again for Leipzig clash but defender returns

Hwang Hee-Chan, Ozan Kabak RB Leipzig v Liverpool February 2021

A knee injury means Liverpool forward Roberto Firmino is doubtful for the Champions League last-16 second-leg clash with RB Leipzig.

The Brazil international, who missed Sunday’s defeat by Fulham, did not train with the squad prior to them flying out for their ‘home’ leg in Budapest due to coronavirus restrictions.

Sadio Mane, rested at the weekend, looks set to take his place. Ozan Kabak, absent on Sunday, returned to the squad and is likely to start at centre-back.

After a woeful run of Premier League results, Klopp’s immediate focus is getting his side through the last-16 tie. The Reds hold a 2-0 advantage from the first leg.

Their Bundesliga opponents have won eight of the last nine with their only blip that defeat to Liverpool.

The Reds are, however, at rock-bottom with their confidence after an unprecedented six successive home league defeats.

“We never had momentum in the Premier League, but we have momentum in the Champions League. We qualified from the group stages, we played very well against Leipzig,” said Klopp.

Wijnaldum: No news on Liverpool future

Wijnaldum: No news on Liverpool future

Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum says he has 'no news' on his future at the club with his contract expiring at the end of the season.

“Of course they have a very different momentum, as they have won four matches on the trot. So statistically it is different but the good thing about football is the previous results don’t have an influence on the match. If it is a different tournament even less so.”

Massive Klopp relief for Liverpool

Jurgen Klopp has ruled himself out of the running to replace Joachim Low as the manager of the German national team.

On Tuesday, it was announced Low will step down from his role as national team boss following Euro 2020 after asking to end his contract early.

Klopp was immediately installed as one of the favourites but the 53-year-old said: “Am I available for the job after the summer? No.

“Someone else will do the job and with the number of good German managers I am sure the German FA will find a good solution.

“I have three years left at Liverpool. It’s simple. You sign a contract and you stick to it. I stuck to contracts at Mainz and Dortmund.Read more…
