Exciting midfielder joins Haaland, Davies as Liverpool targets, says pundit

Haaland Gio Reyna

Three Bundesliga stars are the focus of Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool scouts, according to Jan Aage Fjortoft.

Former Middlesbrough striker Fjortoft is now a prominent pundit in European football and he believes Klopp has his scouts watching the every move of Erling Haaland and Alphonso Davies.

Now, the duo are hardly unknowns and both come with huge price tags. In fact Haaland, who moved to Borussia Dortmund for €22.5m in January, now has a release clause of €75m.

He also has plenty of suitors from throughout Europe, while Davies is currently negotiatking a new mega contract at Bayern Munich and Fjortfoft admits “he’s out of reach”.

One interesting name that Fjortoft did bring to the table though is Gio Reyna.

“I think they are paying special attention to Dortmund,” Fjortoft told Empire of the Kop. “The American Gio Reyna – and of course – Erling Haaland. And then there is Alphonso Davies at Bayern, but he is obviously unattainable.”

Sunderland-born Reyna is a USA youth international and is the son of Claudio.

His not yet a regular for Dortmund. The attacking midfielder is just 17 though and is fancied to go on and compete at the top level.

And at Dortmund, who have a record of developing talent, he appears to be at the right club and Liverpool would face a huge task luring him back to England.

Klopp has become his own enemy

Meanwhile, Fjortoft was asked about his thoughts on Liverpool’s transfer window so far. A window which has seen them miss out on Timo Werner, while the champions have been non-committal over all the talk about Thiago.

“We know that Klopp wanted Werner. We know, not at least in an interview with me after the Tottenham game, that Werner was very fascinated by Klopp and Liverpool.

“Klopp spoke to him and wanted him to be patient. And fair enough, Covid 19 has made the clubs more careful. But after talking, Werner couldn’t wait for Liverpool any longer and signed for Chelsea.

“It seems like Klopp has been told to sell before he can buy…But I will also state that Klopp somehow has become his own ‘enemy’, as he has shown so many times that he can make good players into great players.

“The owners have of course noticed that, and have possibly told him to ‘do it again’!

“Having said that, the owners did once spend a lot of money on Allison and van Dijk – which wasn’t bad!”
