Former Arsenal striker on Liverpool’s radar after 9-goal start to the season

Donyell Malen TEAMtalk

Liverpool are tracking highly-rated PSV Eindhoven striker Donyell Malen, according to a report in Italy.

Calciomercato report, albeit briefly that the Reds are watching the 20-year-old striker, who scored all five for PSV last weekend in the 5-0 win over Vitesse Arnhem.

Malen also netted in Thursday night’s 3-2 victory over Sporting Lisbon in the Europa League and his goal tally has hit nine in just 12 games so fat this campaign.

The Arsenal academy product, who was sold to PSV Eindhoven in 2017, also came off the bench to score on his Netherlands debut in the 4-2 victory over Germany earlier this month.

It’s that form which has apparently alerted Jurgen Klopp, who allowed Daniel Sturridge to leave at the end of the season, whilst Danny Ings’ move to Southampton was made permanent.

Klopp does have high hopes that Rhian Brewster, who has now recovered from serious injury, can step into the first-team fold and act as cover for Roberto Firmino, but the German is understood to be open to adding another talented youngster to his squad.

PSV stand to make a big profit on a player they signed for less than £1m on transfer deadline day just over two years ago when Malen left London for Holland.

Malen’s departure was shrouded in confusion because only weeks early Arsene Wenger had claimed the player was “doing very well” on the club’s pre-season, as reported in The Sun.

But soon after he told De Telegraaf: “That I was sent away from Arsenal is certainly not true. I still had a contract for a year and Arsenal even wanted to extend that.

“I don’t play football for the money. I never did that. Otherwise I would not have left England.”
