Former defender issues Man Utd transfer warning over Mourinho

Wes Brown insists Jose Mourinho is right to be unhappy by his lack of signings this summer – and insists Man Utd need to sign more players if they are to challenge City.

United’s noisy neighbours finished a distant 19 points ahead of their cross-city rivals – and the signings of Fred, Diogo Dalot and Lee Grant so far this summer have done little to convince Brown that that gap can close.

A deal for Yerry Mina appears to be close for United, but Brown still thinks United must further invest.

“Every team always needs strengthening and every year they must add to their squad,” Brown, speaking exclusively to 888sport, said. “I’m sure that Jose will be trying to do that, even to the last day.

“I’m also sure that it will happen as well. Managers want to get new faces in and Jose is no different. I’m sure he’ll be after someone. Precisely who that will be we don’t know but there are a few names flying about. Last season City ran away with the league and signings need to be made to catch up to them.”

Brown also admits Mourinho has cut an unhappy figure in recent weeks and believes that’s the Manchester United manager’s way of expressing his frustrations at a lack of new additions.

“Jose has been very frustrated with the players that he’s got at the moment. I know a lot of people haven’t been there in the US because of the World Cup and, as we’ve seen on the telly, he’s not been happy with that,” he added. “Maybe showing that is his way of trying to get these signings done.

“He’s definitely upset that he didn’t have his full-strength squad out there in America, especially those first two games. He’ll be pleased that they beat Real Madrid with the team he’s got but he will still want to strengthen his squad and get the best players he can.”

“Obviously he is frustrated and the comments are his way of getting that frustration out there. That’s what Mourinho does. He wants his best players with him and he hasn’t got them.”
