Major League Soccer outfit Portland Timbers have signed former Newcastle United defender Steven Taylor.

The reigning MLS champions, who are currently just outside the play-off places in the Western Conference, have announced the addition of the 30-year-old centre-back to their squad.

Taylor made over 250 appearances for Newcastle before leaving St James’ Park following the club’s relegation from the Premier League last season.

Portland head coach Caleb Porter told his club’s website: “Steven Taylor gives us a proven piece that can step into our back-line and perform immediately. His experience and leadership will be very important to our team down the stretch.”

Taylor joins a squad that contains fellow Englishmen Jack Barmby and Liam Ridgewell.
