Manchester United’s decision not to sign Christian Pulisic ahead of Chelsea has provoked an angry reaction from a former scout.
Pulisic joined Borussia Dortmund at just 16 years of age and quickly established himself in their side.
Such was his progress that he soon had scouts from all of Europe’s top sides watching him.
Pulisic was linked with Arsenal and Liverpool, while there was interest in Spain from the likes of Barcelona.
However, it was Chelsea who made their move, paying Dortmund £58m to lure the American to Stamford Bridge last year.
Pulisic has impressed this season under Frank Lampard, scoring 10 times and laying on a further 10 assists from 33 appearances.
But Jorge Alvial, who worked for United for three years before his departure in 2018, claims he advised the Red Devils to sign him.
Watching his extensively during his time in Dortmund, Alvial has revealed he strongly recommended they make their move. He also wanted them to sign Alphonso Davies prior to his move to Bayern Munich.
“When I first got hired one of the people that I recommended right away was Pulisic. I knew him and his background,” Alvial told the Manchester Evening News.
“I knew how well he was developing in Dortmund and he was just going to keep coming up. He was doing very well and would become a superstar.
“I’ve always believed in him, we always have kept close contact with his father. I called him to say I was recommending him to Manchester United.
“So it was many times that I did recommend him, but at the same time because I was only doing North America, it wasn’t my region because he was playing in Germany.
“We all had a list and I had him first along with Alphonso. ‘I highly, highly recommended for them to sign him, and I know also the German scout was very into him, he really liked him too.
“It wasn’t a case of ‘look at this kid’, it was ‘sign this kid’.
“When I recommend a player usually it is an example of a player that I feel has tremendous potential.
“For Pulisic I jumped many levels that we are supposed to do and I went directly to the head scout. I said: ‘Listen, this player is extraordinary we need to see him right away. If we don’t sign him, someone else is going to see him, and is going to beat us’. It’s the same thing that happened with Alphonso.”
Chelsea keen on Ginter
Chelsea have identified Matthias Ginter as the man to solve their defensive dilemma, according to reports.
Ginter has been one of the Bundesliga’s best defenders in 2019-20. But with his contract expiring next summer, Borussia Monchengladbach face a tough decision over one of their key players.
Gladbach do have the option to extend his deal by a further year, but are aware that selling him this year may maximise their profit. Hence, several of Europe’s top clubs have informed them of their interest.
Inter Milan are keen to tempt club and player by offering big money to both parties to get a deal done. However, Chelsea are ready to rival them for his signature.
According to Kicker, Chelsea possess a “concrete interest” in Ginter, who has 29 caps for Germany. Despite this, they are yet to make an official offer. Read more here…
