Manchester United could reportedly strike an agreement with Lille to sign defender Gabriel Magalhaes “in the next few days” after submitting a better offer than their rivals.
Gabriel is a target for several clubs across Europe this summer, including Everton and Napoli.
However, more recent reports suggested United have joined the bidding, with a fourth – so far unnamed club – also keen.
The Red Devils have allegedly opened talks with Gabriel’s agent as they look to bolster their defence. Indeed, another centre-back is reportedly a priority for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer ahead of next season.
A separate claim from French outlet L’Equipe (via Sport Witness) on Sunday said the offers from Everton and Napoli consisted of a €25million (£22.5million) transfer fee and €2million (£1.8million) in bonuses.
According to Italian journalist Emanuele Cammaroto, however, United have outperformed their rivals. The Old Trafford club have reportedly offered €27million (£24.3million) up front and €2million in bonuses.
As such, the reporter adds in the Napoli Magazine that Lille and Gabriel could reach an agreement with United in the coming days.
United’s hunt for another defender allegedly centres around their desire to find a solid partner for Harry Maguire. Victor Lindelof has emerged as the top candidate, but Solskjaer wants another option.
Reports linked the Red Devils with Bournemouth’s Nathan Ake, but the Dutchman is close to joining Manchester City.
Gabriel has established himself as a key player for Lille, having broken into the first team 18 months ago.
He helped them secure a fourth-placed finish this season and played every minute of their six Champions League group games.
GIGGS URGES MAN UTD TO SIGN SANCHO
Another area United are reportedly trying to improve ahead of next season is attack.
Reports have linked Solskjaer’s side with a move for Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho in recent months.
Red Devils legend Giggs says Sancho and Aston Villa captain Jack Grealish would be fantastic additions.
