Gabriel Martinelli says he is close to returning to using the ball in training as the Arsenal striker continues his recovery from injury.

Martinelli enjoyed a breakout season with Arsenal in 2019-20 after joining from Ituano in Brazil last summer. The teenage striker scored 10 times in his first year in English football.

However, his season came to an abrupt end when he suffered a knee injury during training in June. It has put him on the sidelines for a number of months.

Now, though, the Brazilian has given a promising update about his return to action – insisting there is a lot to look forward to under Mikel Arteta.

“I’m feeling very well, I’m regaining confidence and I can feel my knee is better,” he told

“After an injury like this you are kind of scared to force the knee again but the past couple of weeks it has been fine and soon I can start training with the ball.

“I think we have an excellent squad and along with Mikel’s forward thinking and winning mentality we can carry on doing well.

“We are playing well and training well, everyone wants to win and we are all giving everything. I believe this season is very promising.

“We won trophies last season and I believe we can win this season again and also qualify for the Champions League.”

Martinelli welcomes arrival of Brazilian pair

In the time since Martinelli last played for Arsenal, they have won the FA Cup and Community Shield, as well as backing up their ambition with some smart moves in the transfer market.

Among those to arrive at the Emirates Stadium over the summer were his Brazilian compatriots Willian (from Chelsea) and Gabriel Magalhaes (from Lille).

And Martinelli has confirmed he is pleased to see two more players from his homeland signing on at the Emirates Stadium.

“I’m very happy, it’s good to have players from your country that speak your language,” he said. “I already knew David Luiz and now it is great to meet Willian and Gabi.

“I only just met them but I can already tell they are great guys, we are always laughing and it is a great environment to be in. They are playing well and giving their best too.

“I think they have a lot to offer to this club on and off the pitch.”
