Gareth Bale said it feels “amazing” to be back at Tottenham after starting his first game for the club since returning from Real Madrid.

Bale re-joined Tottenham on loan from Madrid this summer, seven years after what was then a world record move away from the London-based club.

Spurs fans have had to wait to see him back in action, as he was recovering from an injury when he arrived. However, after coming on as a substitute against West Ham at the weekend, Bale earned his first start of the season against LASK.

The winger set up the deflection that led to Tottenham’s second goal, put into his own net by a LASK defender, in their 3-0 Europa League win.

And even though Bale only lasted just over an hour as he continues to build up his fitness, the 31-year-old was delighted to be back enjoying his football with the club.

He told BT Sport: “We know these games are important. We went out there and did a great job.

“It wasn’t our best performance but we were solid and most important is the three points.

“I am a bit stiff. It is like a mini pre-season for me and I am trying to get minutes into the legs. Hopefully it won’t take me long to get back up to full speed and I am enjoying being on the pitch and being back at this amazing club.”

Bale feeling ‘loved and appreciated’

Asked what it felt like to be back, Bale replied: “It is amazing. It is a big reason why I play well and why I came back.

“You want to be loved and appreciated. I will give everything for this shirt.

“This is a great squad that has a lot of depth, hopefully we can use that to our advantage. It is always good to have competition to keep you on your toes.”
