Neville notices key Anfield flaw that sums up ‘slim’ Man Utd title chances

Gary Neville TEAMtalk

Gary Neville has said that a lack of belief shown by Manchester United against Liverpool shows why their chances of Premier League title glory are “slim”.

United remained top of the table on Sunday after drawing with Liverpool, but had their lead cut to two points. Indeed, Manchester City’s fifth win in a row put them second, with the Reds now fourth.

Nevertheless, the 0-0 draw at Anfield extended the Red Devils’ unbeaten run to 12 matches, the league’s best record.

Speaking on his Sky Sports podcast, though, Neville added that Paul Pogba’s influence is United’s best chance of winning the title.

After struggling with injury and illness over the last 12 months, the Frenchman has played 90 minutes in seven of the last nine games. What’s more, he has put in impressive displays, notching two goals and an assist.

“I think Manchester United ’s chances of winning this league are slim – Liverpool and Man City are still the best two teams in this league,” Neville said.

“But the slim chance they have to win this league will depend on something like Paul Pogba delivering a cameo of two or three months of brilliance, which he is capable of.

“He’s got confidence, he’s got arrogance – good arrogance, in a sense that he believes in himself.

“He thinks he should be playing in the biggest games in the world, and winning titles, and thinking positive thoughts, thinking you’re the best is a big thing when you’re looking to win.”

Neville added that United’s lack of belief could continue to hurt them as the season progresses. Liverpool dominated Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men for 70 minutes, before the visitors somewhat turned on their attacking potential.

“Just in that last 20 minutes, I felt United just had that little bit of missing belief,” Neville said.

“It’s not a long way away, but that’s the bit that will stop them winning the title.”

Fernandes offers Man Utd advice

Meanwhile, Bruno Fernandes has seemingly offered his side advice on how to look back on Sunday’s draw.

The midfielder did not have one of his best games in a United shirt, in contrast to his usual performances.

However, he took to social media to offer a message of support to his teammates and fans.
