Neville namechecks quartet to take Man Utd to ‘next level’

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer head shot Molineux TEAMtalk

Gary Neville says Manchester United “have got to do big things this summer” and has namechecked four players who can take the club to the next level.

The former United defender and Sky Sports pundit believes Wednesday’s date with Villarreal in the Europa League final is crucial for the club. Neville seems to suggest that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is starting to build a team at Old Trafford and a trophy would be a good end to a season of progress for the Norwegian.

United’s second placed finish in the Premier League surprised many this season, although Solskjaer sees it as no  reason to celebrate. But he will be celebrating if he can secure his first piece as silverware as United manager in Gdansk.

His attention will then switch to transfers and he has confirmed plans are already afoot ahead of the summer window opening.

“We are looking at the squad, the players who are going to stay, those who might be leaving and I hope that we’re going to strengthen with a few…two or three players that we definitely need to challenge higher up in the table.

“We’re still too far behind to think it is just going to come by itself,” said the United boss.

Whether or not Solskjaer’s plans match the thoughts of Neville remains to be seen, but the latter wants United to make a statement.

“If Man Utd can win on Wednesday, this has been a really good season for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, it would demonstrate great progress,” Neville said on his Sky Sports podcast.

Mauricio Pochettino could return to Tottenham, Man Utd are prepared to swap three players for Harry Kane, while Newcastle are determined to keep Arsenal loanee Joe Willock.

“Then you are talking about recruitment – you are talking about Varane, Kane, Haaland, Sancho. Those players that you know can take them to that next level. There would be numbers in those attacking areas which means they would become more exceptional in front of goal.

‘Solskjaer will have to do something exceptional’

“Then a player at the back that would give that partnership alongside Maguire that you could see being there for three or fours years and would really challenge and put United at the forefront of challenging City and Liverpool.

“But Solskjaer is going to have to do something exceptional because Tuchel, Guardiola and Klopp are exceptional winning managers and they are hungry and ruthless.

“They want to win relentlessly so Man Utd cannot think that, if they win the Europa League on Wednesday and finish in second, that they still do not need that jump up a level. They are still 12 points behind City, you have got to swing that four games and it does not happen easily.

“So United have got to do big things this summer and Wednesday is such an important moment in the club’s history for Solskjaer and these players to get a medal around their necks.”
