Gary Neville believes Manchester United could succeed Liverpool as Premier League champions next season – if they make one key signing.
The Sky Sports pundit has watched on in horror as Jurgen Klopp’s side ended a 30-year wait to be crowned champions of England. You can see what Jurgen Klopp had to say about talk of a statue in his honour here.
Their dominance this season saw them crowned with seven games left to play – a record – and Neville isn’t happy.
Nonetheless, there are signs of life with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side. The Red Devils made it 14 matches unbeaten by narrowly edging past Norwich into the FA Cup semi-finals. You can see the draw for the semi-finals here.
Speaking to Premier League Daily, Neville reckons one more signing can help United close that gap further. He wants to see United sign another centre-back to partner Harry Maguire.
United will have hoped Maguire at £80m would have been that man. However, a lack of a consistent partner alongside him has convinced Neville another elite centre-half must arrive.
“I think one more signing,” Neville said.
“You think about Liverpool signing [Virgil] Van Dijk and Alisson in goal.
“One or two more signings or [Paul] Pogba and one more signing playing to their absolute best. I think United can get closer.”
When asked where in particular, Neville answered: “Centre-back, you look at the impact Van Dijk had.
“Maguire has had a really strong impact but another real strong centre-back.
“They’ve still got to be defensively sound. One more signing and United can challenge.”
Alan Shearer had a similar chat over with Ian Wright over the weekend. However, the former Newcastle striker is in the belief United are still four players short.
Shearer told the BBC: “I think three or four big players. Right side of midfield, possibly a centre-forward, centre-halve and maybe another midfielder.”
Wright added: “That’s the kind of signing (Sancho) they have to make if they’re going to be challenging City and Liverpool. Everybody is excited about Bruno Fernandes and Pogba.
“Martial and Rashford, both of them 19 goals each. Last time any Man Utd players got that was Chicharito (Javier Hernandez) and (Dimitar) Berbatov.
“It seems like it’s starting to happen [for United].”
United want to sell five players
Manchester United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward plans to offload up to five unwanted stars this summer to help fund Jadon Sancho club record signing.
Sancho has been heavily linked with a return to England in recent months. The former Manchester City youngster has scored 20 times and produced 18 assists this season with Borussia Dortmund.
Dortmund though want to keep Sancho for at least another season but are taking a tough stance on his future. What’s more, they’re said to have placed a £115million price tag on the attacker’s head.
United, however, still remain keen despite the big price. Now, according to a report on Sunday, they will look to offload five players to try raise up to £60million. Read more here.
