Gary Neville has slammed the “terrible” timing of super agent Mino Raiola’s comments about Paul Pogba’s Manchester United future.
Raiola recently claimed in an interview in Italy that the midfielder is “unhappy” and “has to change teams”.
Indeed, he urged his client to leave Old Trafford in January despite his contract running until 2022.
Raiola’s comments are the latest attempt to engineer Pogba a move away; he did so last summer when Real Madrid showed interest in the Frenchman.
Writing on Twitter, though, Neville pointed out that the nature of the comments demand a response if Pogba was not aware of his agent’s plans.
“Raiola – it’s happened many times before,” he wrote. “However, surely Paul knew he was making this announcement?
“If he wasn’t aware then we should see a quote from him very soon correcting his agent. Finally to do this ahead of Leipzig and the Man Derby is terrible timing for the Team.”
Indeed, United play RB Leipzig away on Tuesday needing a point to qualify for the last 16 of the Champions League.
The Red Devils then return for a crunch Premier League fixture against derby rivals Manchester City. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have a reputation in that tie after beating City twice last season.
Pogba, meanwhile, has struggled for form and match minutes due to injury and illness in recent months.
He only made eight appearances before the Premier League’s restart last term due to two foot injuries. He then contracted coronavirus in the summer.
More recently, though, he admitted that he is in one of the most difficult periods of his career. What’s more, France coach Didier Deschamps has noted that the 27-year-old is not in his best form.
Lingard has LaLiga suitor
Meanwhile, a report has claimed that Jesse Lingard has interest from Real Sociedad.
The midfielder has fallen down the pecking order under Solskjaer of late and is struggling for game time.
TEAMtalk previously revealed that he is open to leaving in January and the Spanish club have reportedly come forward.
