Tottenham flop’s father drops veiled dig at Mourinho over son’s treatment

Gedson Fernandes

The father of Tottenham midfielder Gedson Fernandes has labelled his son’s lack of game time since moving to Tottenham as “sad”.

Fernandes moved to Spurs on an 18-month loan from Benfica in January, but the deal has so far failed to bear fruit.

The 21-year-old has only made 13 appearances in all competitions, most of those coming last term. Indeed, his only minutes this campaign have arrived in the Carabao Cup.

Fernandes played 63 minutes in that competition but his only other noteworthy mention was a bench appearance in the 1-1 draw with Newcastle in September.

Spurs head coach Jose Mourinho admitted that the 21-year-old could leave in January but insisted that the player’s exclusion is not making him uncomfortable.

Nevertheless, Fernandes’ father, Edeson, does not share the same sentiment. As quoted by Desporto, he reminded Mourinho that his son moved to England to play more regularly.

“My desire is for him to play, whether at Benfica, Sporting, FC Porto or another team,” Fernandes’ father said.

Gedson Fernandes TEAMtalk

“He went to Tottenham to play, because at Benfica he also played little. Going there not to play is sad.”

Fernandes is not the only player to have suffered from a lack of action this season. Indeed, more senior stars such as Dele Alli have had their chances restricted.

Mourinho has blamed the size of his squad for his omissions, including those for Alli.

Winks joins Tottenham doubters

More recently, though, Harry Winks has admitted that he has suffered a “difficult” start to the season.

The England international has only played nine times, including four Premier League games. However, he has not earned a place in the squad for recent key matches.

And while the 24-year-old continues to be a regular feature for his country, reports have suggested that, like Fernandes, he could look to leave if his situation worsens.
