Surprise name absent from Tottenham EL squad as duo also miss out

Gedson Fernandes TEAMtalk

A trio of first-teamers have been left out of Tottenham’s Europa League squad, including midfielder Gedson Fernandes.

Out-of-favour full-back Danny Rose and goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga are also omitted ahead of the group stage, which begins on October 22.

Rose failed to secure a move away from the club before the closure of the international transfer window on Monday.

He may be forced have to look for a club in the Championship before the October 16 domestic deadline. Either that or he will have to wait until January to move on.

The England left-back spent the second half of last season on loan at Newcastle after falling out of favour with Jose Mourinho.

Fernandes, meanwhile, joined from Benfica on an 18-month loan deal in January. But he has also struggled for game time.

The Portuguese has made just one appearance so far this season, in Spurs’ penalty shootout win over Chelsea in the EFL Cup.

Gazzaniga, who has lost his place as deputy to Hugo Lloris to Joe Hart, has also not been included.

The trio will not be able to participate in the group stages this season. However, they could feature in the knockout stages next year – if they are still at the club.

New signings Gareth Bale, Carlos Vinicius, Sergio Reguilon, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Matt Doherty and Hart have been named.

Former boss Mauricio Pochettino’s son, Maurizio Pochettino, is also eligible on the homegrown B list.
