Georginio Wijnaldum TEAMtalk

Georginio Wijnaldum has once again put the ball in Liverpool’s court over his future and claimed there is “no news”.

The Liverpool midfielder, named by Gary Neville as the Premier League’s most under-rated player, is out of contract in the summer and could walk away for free.

Jurgen Klopp, who named the 30-year-old as Liverpool’s most consistent player this season, wants him to stay after his stellar contribution to their recent success.

The Merseysiders offered him a new deal back in December but he has yet to put pen to paper.

An agreement over wages and length of contract has yet to be found and the Netherlands international says it’s down to the club.

He spoke out on his contract situation after Liverpool’s defeat to Fulham on Sunday, insisting “the most important thing right now is that we fix things as a team”.

“If you’re a fan and you support the team – you support the player and what they do with me,” Wijnaldum told beIN Sports.

“You want to hear what’s going to happen but on the other side, for me, if there’s nothing to say and no news I cannot say something.

“I hope they can understand that and I hope they will stay patient until there’s news.

“The most important thing right now is that we fix things in the game as a team and we get results.

“Talking about an individual, in this case about me and my contract situation – because I just said there’s no news, I think we can focus on better things than on my situation.

“When there is news, we will bring it out.”

Barcelona were mooted as the primary option for Wijnaldum last summer, but since then PSG and Inter Milan have also emerged as potential suitors.

Inter ‘crazy’ about Gini

Barca boss Ronald Koeman admitted interest in the player last summer, but now according to Sport Mediaset journalist Sandro Sabatini, the Nerazzurri already have an agreement with the player.

Inter coach Antonio Conte, according to FC Inter News, is “crazy” about Wijnaldum. However, the club need to determine if the deal would work financially.

At present, Wijnaldum’s salary seems slightly out of reach given his demands of €10m per season. Even so, he seems open to the idea of playing for Inter.

Wijnaldum joined Liverpool from Newcastle United in the summer of 2016. Rarely injured, he has made 223 appearances in all competitions, scoring 22 goals, including 16 in the Premier League.

He has started 26 of the champions’  28 top-flight games in 2020-2021
