Steven Gerrard has labelled Liverpool target Virgil van Dijk an “amazing player” that he wanted the Reds to have signed in the past.
Van Dijk has been linked with a switch to Anfield all summer, despite the Reds officially ending their interest when Southampton complained about the player being tapped up.
That didn’t last long, however, and the Dutch star was soon being touted once again as the Merseyside outfit’s prime summer target.
Saints, for their part, are still playing hardball over the 26-year-old, who submitted a transfer request earlier this week as he tries to force a move away from St Mary’s.
Van Dijk’s preference is still said to be a move to Anfield, despite rumoured interest from Chelsea too, and when asked about the player Gerrard said: “I think he’s an amazing player.
“I think he would strengthen any team in the league.
“[From] what I have seen at Celtic, what suggested at Southampton, I was actually hoping we [Liverpool] would go make a bid for him when he came from Celtic.
“It was no surprise to me that he set the world alight at Southampton.
“You can understand why the fee is going to be huge if he eventually get this transfer over the line.
“You think of all them top four teams, even the top six, he’d make them all better.”
