It was maybe not the strenuous test Sir Alex Ferguson would have wanted but, in maintaining a 100% record in four games so far, at least United are heading towards their quest to land an unprecedented fourth consecutive league title in confident mood.

Owen hit a well-taken first-half brace (24 & 40), the first a tap in from Nani’s cross before, and after strikes from Dimitar Berbatov (34) and Zoran Tosic (35), the former Newcastle striker smashed home a sublime volley, following Berbatov’s neat pass.

The second-half was a procession, with Nani (50) producing a trademark back-flip in celebration at his effort before Giggs hit a hat-trick (62, 71, 89)after coming on as a substitute for the last half-hour.
