Graeme Souness in awe as he explains what Leeds do better than the rest

Leeds Granny Val tribute

Graeme Souness has waxed lyrical about Leeds United and explained why he loves to watch Marcelo Bielsa’s side more than any other.

Leeds moved in to the top half of the table with a 3-0 win over the Saints at Elland Road. The Whites struck three times after the break to earn their first win in three games.

Brazilian attacker Raphinha was the key man, tormenting Southampton defenders throughout and scoring the third goal with a free-kick.

It was another fantastic display from the 24-year-old, who has been linked with Liverpool and Manchester United of late.

Usually a right-sided winger, he starred from the left against Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side. That led Bielsa to explain why he was deployed away from his natural position.

That said, it wasn’t all good news for Raphina. The mesmerising Brazilian was booked after this touching tribute to Ronaldinho’s mother.

Souness though admits he loves watching Leeds play. He says their attacking football is genuinely so pleasing on the eye. And while they don’t always win, he says they do it better than any other side in the Premier League.

“He’s improved players that were certainly not Premier League players, that look like they’re real Premier League players now,” he told Sky Sports.

“It’s a brand of football that’s refreshing.

“The game, the way it’s evolved in recent years, all the stats coming out about pass completion and how much possession you’ve had, they’re not caring about that.

“It’s all about getting the ball forward, let’s try and be on the front foot all of the time. Yeah, we’ll make mistakes because we’re not trying to make the easy pass – 10 yards square – I think they’re a great watch.

“They are my favourite team to watch in the league this year.”

Bielsa is ‘unique’

Souness also believes Bielsa deserves more credit than he’s getting, despite the acclaim often falling his way.

“I think the manager is quite unique,” Souness added. “When you’ve got people like Pep Guardiola, another serious manager who is talking about him about being his mentor, then he’s obviously got something.

“I’d love to sit down with him and ask him a simple question. I’d just say to him ‘do you put entertainment and style of play in front of results? Because that’s how it appears’.

“Go back a week or 10 days, they’re 4-0 down at Arsenal – and you’re thinking, ‘4-0 and they’re not out of this’. Then they get it back to 4-2 and have a great chance to make it 4-3.

“They’ve got this, only he could tell you, or the players could tell you. They’ve got a belief that you rarely see in other teams. Even when they’re behind, it’s not a problem, we’ll score.”
