Souness notices key Pogba difference as he wipes criticism slate clean
Graeme Souness says that Paul Pogba has proven him wrong and identified a key change which has helped the Manchester United midfielder’s overall game.
Souness has proved a vocal critic of the Frenchman in recent years following his £89milllion move back to United.
Indeed, their feud reached a head when Pogba said that he did not know former Liverpool midfielder Souness. The ex-manager then replied “put your medals on the table”.
However, speaking on the Robbie Fowler podcast, Souness sought to clarify his comments. What’s more, the pundit then admitted that Pogba’s upturn in form has proved him wrong.
“There’s no doubting Paul’s qualities. They’re unique qualities,” Souness said.
“But it’s a bit like Jack Grealish, I think he has had a fabulous year. For me, he’s sprinting as quickly going back towards his own goal now as he does the other way forwards.
“He’s putting a shift in now for the cause. There’s no doubting their qualities.”
Pogba has faced continued criticism since his move back to Old Trafford in 2016, especially over his work rate and consistency.
But after a tough year with injury and illness, the 27-year-old is in arguably his best spell of form since putting a United shirt back on.
Indeed, he has played nine of the last 10 Premier League games, playing 90 minutes in eight of those. He has also scored two goals in three games which have earned United six crucial Premier League points.
Recent reports have suggested that Darren Fletcher’s return to United in a senior coaching role is helping Pogba’s defensive attributes.
Pogba can be the difference
“Paul Pogba has got unique qualities. Another wonder goal [for United],” Souness said. “He’s the difference in big games.
“My criticism of his was that he didn’t work hard enough for the cause and his team-mates. But you would not find me questioning his raw ability.
“He’s up there with anyone you want to name around today. I just want more form him.
“He’s that good, he can be the difference in most games; he’s got that much quality. It’s all about the work rate and what he was doing without the ball.”
United return to action on Wednesday when they face top-flight strugglers Sheffield United.
