Potter explains why Brighton deserved Liverpool draw despite VAR help

Graham Potter admitted that some things went in Brighton’s favour against Liverpool, but insists they deserved their point.

Brighton denied Liverpool a victory thanks to a late penalty from Pascal Gross. However, they had VAR to thank for their draw – as it ruled out two Liverpool goals and awarded them that penalty.

Jurgen Klopp was tetchy after the game and refused to go into great length about the decisions, but opposite number Potter said that managers must come to terms with the intervention of VAR.

The Brighton boss also maintained that their performance against the champions was enough for them to earn a share of the spoils.

He told BT Sport: “Performance-wise I thought we were really good. We were playing against a top opponent. We played with personality, intensity.

“The margins went in our favour today, which can happen at times, but that’s down to our performance.

“We’ve had a lot of drama in stoppage time this season, which is crazy.

“Apart from the first five or 10 minutes we asked a real question and with a bit of luck we could have taken the lead. I thought we sustained that quite well.

“In the second half we gradually came back into it and put such a lot into the game. I thought we deserved it.

“Football is played by human beings, so there are going to be some mistakes. I think you have to accept VAR is here, try and support it and get on with it as best you can.”

Klopp rant

Liverpool boss Klopp was not in such a good mood after the game, though – and not just because they dropped points.

Klopp once again hit out at scheduling issues, engaging in a direct argument with BT Sport interviewer Des Kelly that lasted around five minutes.
