Grealish jokes at reason for not joining Man Utd; namechecks OT star

Jack Grealish Aston Villa

Aston Villa captain Jack Grealish has joked about the reason why he did not complete a proposed move to Manchester United last summer.

The Red Devils were very keen on a deal for the 25-year-old but were put off by Villa’s £80million asking price.

The midlands club were able to quote that price after avoiding relegation last season.

Grealish then celebrated top-flight survival by penning a new contract. That deal will keep him at his boyhood club until at least 2025.

The England playmaker was asked point blank why he didn’t sign for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men, in a video with YouTuber and United fan Harry Pinero.

After the question was put to him, Grealish chuckled and said: “You’ve got Bruno anyway.”

Pinero continued his praise for Grealish, adding: “You’ve got the filthiest first touch in the Prem.”

However, Grealish once again issued a humble response by praising Fernandes and Manchester City midfielderKevin De Bruyne.

“That’s not true,” he said. “I do some alright touches but you need to put a bit of respect on Bruno and KDB.”

Sky Sports reporter James Cooper says Manchester United chief executive Ed Woodward is 'bullish' about the club's progress both on and off the pitch after the release of their second quarter fiscal results.

Despite his throwaway comments about United, it is still rumoured that Old Trafford bosses are monitoring his progress.

Villa, however, have gone from strength to strength this season and are in the shake-up for a top-six finish.

Matic has simple answer to United issues

Nemanja Matic has told Manchester United the simple way in which the team can bring an immediate end to their worrying wait for a Premier League goal.

A day after rivals Manchester City made it 21 wins in a row to open up a 15-point gap at the top, the Red Devils were left frustrated in a goalless draw with the Eagles. They have won only one of their last five matches in the division.

In Gary Neville’s words, United are sleepwalking their games right now. He fears they could be in danger of letting slip their top-four place if they don’t wake up soon.

At the heart of their issues is a concerning lack of goals. The Red Devils have now gone 285 minutes since their last goal – Bruno Fernandes’ penalty against Newcastle on February 25.

Indeed, three full games have come and gone with United drawing a blank. It’s a trend they need to snap soon if they are to secure a top-fourth berth.

Addressing their concerns, Matic wants Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side to start taking more risks. Read more…
