Harry Kane, Tottenham striker

Pep Guardiola has appeared to cast doubt over whether Manchester City will be able to sign Tottenham striker Harry Kane this summer.

City have emerged as the firm favourites to land the England skipper after Kane admitted he wanted out of Spurs, after the club ended the campaign without a trophy again and out of the Champions League places.

Etihad chiefs are already rumoured to have had a £100million offer for the 27-year-old knocked back. Indeed, Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy wants nearer to £150m for the club’s free-scoring talisman.

But speaking to Catalan news station TV3, Guardiola claimed that the prices being quoted have made a deal “impossible”.

City lost the services of Sergio Aguero at the end of last season when he left to join Barcelona on a free transfer.

The addition of a new frontman was thought to be uppermost in Guardiola’s mind. However, it appears that the City chief is open to the possibility of sticking with what he has.

Money too tight to mention

He told TV3: “At the prices we are not going to buy any strikers. It is impossible, we cannot afford it. It is impossible.

“All clubs are struggling financially; we are not an exception. We have Gabriel [Jesus], Ferran [Torres] who has been incredible in this position, we have young players in the academy, we play many times with a false nine.

“I don’t know what is going to happen. Maybe we are going to buy but maybe we are not going to buy a striker for next season.

“Today there is more chance we aren’t going to buy a striker for next season.”

As for Kane himself, the Tottenham star admits he will discuss his future with new boss Nuno Espirito Santo after the Euros.
