Guardiola reveals Man City mantra that could lead to thriller in Germany

Manager Pep Guardiola insists Manchester City will go all out to win the return leg after a 2-1 triumph over Borussia Dortmund in their Champions League quarter-final.

City will take a precious 2-1 lead to the Westfalenstadion after Phil Foden’s late winner. The England man struck on 90 minutes after excellent work from Kevin de Bruyne. It was the Belgium ace who gave the hosts the lead on 19 minutes but they could not find another until the death.

Marco Reus levelled the tie six minutes before the end. And it looked as though it would be advantage Dortmund until Foden’s last-gasp heroics. It is now all to play for in Germany and BVB will be a tough nut to crack.

The Spanish tactician was pleased with the result. And he made it clear that there will be no defensive tactics when they do battle once again.

“Better to win than draw. 2-1, Champions League, we are going there to win the game,” he told BT Sport. “In the first half we were not clever with the ball. The second half was much better, we had two or three clear chances to score the second and third but it didn’t happen.

“Dortmund are strong, a good quality with the players they have and the quality it is difficult to do what we want to do it but 2-1 and we have a good chance next week.”

Work to do for Guardiola and co

It was not a vintage night for the Citizens. They perhaps sat back too much after taking an early lead. And it nearly came back to bite them with Dortmund’s equaliser.

It took another moment of magic from the excellent De Bruyne and Foden’s finish to give them an advantage.

Man City boss Pep Guardiola was very happy with his sides level of performance and feels they're "very close" to wrapping up the Premier League title.

City are still fighting on four fronts and the boss is determined to do all he can to ensure that continues.

“We are going to watch the game,” he added. “We will adjust a few things to go there and try to win the game. Next Leeds and then we go to Germany to try and win the game.

“Borussia Dortmund is a typical club from the Champions League. We have one more game there and with the result 2-1 we will try to score the goals there to win.

“We are going to analyse what we have to do like we have done for four or five months. Every game we play to win.”
