Robin van Persie missed a good chance to put Arsenal ahead when he volleyed over in the 20th minute and he was denied again three minutes as Jose Reina tipped his effort around the post.
The hosts were soon ahead, though, as Emmanuel Adebayor headed home the resulting corner.
Liverpool drew level just three minutes later when Dirk Kuyt stabbed home a low cross from Steven Gerrard, who had superbly beaten three players.
A stretching Emmanuel Eboue could not finish off a flowing Arsenal move in the 65th minute but Arsene Wenger’s side felt they should have been awarded a penalty seconds later when Alex Hleb appeared to be pulled back by Kuyt.
It was not given, though, and the Reds held on.
