Hamann explains why Haaland should snub City and only consider Man Utd

Erling Haaland Norway TV interview

Dietmar Hamann believes Erling Haaland should join Manchester United this summer as his No 1 priority ahead of rival Premier League interest from Manchester City.

Haaland is a man in demand thanks to his outstanding goalscoring form over the past couple of years. Since joining Borussia Dortmund in January 2020, he has 45 goals from 46 games.

Indeed, his double against Bayern Munich on Saturday night means he has now reached 100 career goals in record time.

Touted by many as a possible future Ballon d’Or winner, Haaland is expected to continue his rapid rise. That means he is unlikely to stay at Dortmund forever.

He has a release clause that will be active in 2022, allowing clubs to sign him for a price that although not a bargain, could be lower than his true value.

There is a chance that Haaland could quit Dortmund before then. There is a genuine risk that they may miss out on the Champions League for next season.

As such, United are being strongly linked with a summer swoop for the Norwegian goal machine. They, however, are not alone in their pursuit with Chelsea also ready to push hard to sign him.

Manchester City are also reportedly keen to add him to their ranks. Pep Guardiola’s side will likely be seeking a replacement for record goalscorer Sergio Aguero, who is destined to leave as a free agent.

However, former City man Hamann reckons Haaland would thrive at Old Trafford and has suggested City wouldn’t suit his style.

“I don’t think Haaland is a Manchester City player. I can’t see him joining Man City and I’m not sure whether City will be interested in him,” Hamann told Stadium Astro.

“Pep [Guardiola] has got rid of some centre-forwards in the past. The way they play, they like to pass the ball around, I’m not sure whether Haaland would suit Man City or fit in there.

“At Manchester United, they have so many quick players and like to counter-attack, I think Haaland will suit United a lot better than City.

“Can United get him in the summer? I think there might be a situation in the summer if Dortmund miss out on the Champions League, where they might have to sell Haaland and [Jadon] Sancho. I think they could both go in the summer.”

Silvestre says United don’t need Haaland

Former United defender Mikael Silvestre, however, isn’t sure the Red Devils need to move for Haaland.

“There’s no secret that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was chasing Haaland. That couldn’t happen so [Edinson] Cavani came,” he said.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer: I keep in touch with Erling Haaland

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says he keeps in touch with Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland but is happy with Manchester United's recruitment model.

“He’s a player who I think will stay more than a season because he has great mentality and helps the youngsters a lot.

“So I don’t think Manchester United should be pushing to have a new striker this summer.

“On the other side, I think Man City need to reinforce that position because Sergio Aguero is not involved and Jesus is not convincing anybody, I don’t see much improvement from him.”
