Levy has new ‘figure of interest’ to replace Mourinho, but time looks against Spurs chief

Hansi Flick TEAMtalk

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is understood to be interested in speaking with Bayern Munich coach Hansi Flick, claims a report.

Flick, 56, has informed Bayern that he is leaving the club in the summer and he was expected to take over from Joachim Low as Germany coach after the Euros. That has still to be confirmed though with Flick evasive as ever over the weekend after Bayern’s draw with Freiburg. The former Bayern and Germany assistant coach has still to make a definitive decision on his future and that has left a window for a number of clubs to show an interest in him.

“When do the Euros start? Yes, then I still have a little time,” Flick said (as cited by Tz). “(DFB director) Oliver (Bierhoff) is a friend to me, we have always worked together very, very well. We have always shown each other very, very much appreciation. But, I’ve always said that I need some time to see what is next.”

Both Barcelona and Juventus are reportedly interested in Flick, who has guided Bayern to back-to-back Bundesliga titles in his 18 months in charge.

And now the Daily Telegraph claim Flick is “a figure of interest for Levy”.

Sam Wallace goes on to state that “Flick is a possibility although he seems destined to manage Germany”.

Flick certainly seems to fit the profile that Levy is understood to be looking for.

“They are said to seek an established coach — with a strong profile — whose most recent season has been a success,” claims the report.

The last factor is believed to be why Levy has not been falling over himself to appoint the likes of Graham Potter, Scott Parker and Ralph Hasenhüttl.

Whether or not Flick has committed to the DFB remains unclear, but Levy will have to move fast if he is to have any chance of getting close to Flick.

Levy has had a number of setbacks in his hunt for a replacement for Mourinho.

Tottenham boss setbacks

Erik Ten Hag extended his contract at Ajax, while Julian Nagelsmann agreed a deal with Bayern Munich.

Brendan Rodgers also pledged his future to Leicester before they won the FA Cup on Saturday. Rodgers was understood to be firmly on Levy’s hitlist but with the Champions League beckoning with Leicester the former Celtic boss is staying put.

Lazio’s Simeone Inzaghi has emerged as another potential candidate. While Peter Crouch has doubted whether Spurs could lure Steven Gerrard from Rangers.

Gerrard, who lifted the Scottish Premiership title with Rangers on Saturday, is understood to be on Levy’s radar too.

“I hear people talking about the strength of the Scottish League and questioning the quality but what I would argue is this: if it was so easy, why aren’t teams going unbeaten every year?” Crouch said.

“He is going to be an outstanding manager and if I was running Tottenham, I would absolutely be interested in a man of his calibre.

“But could you see Steven Gerrard managing anyone in the Premier League other than Liverpool? No. Nor can I.

“When Steven returns to England, it will be to take over from Jurgen Klopp. I really don’t see it any other way.”
