Redknapp admits regret at seeing Tottenham downfall under Mourinho

Jose Mourinho Tottenham TEAMtalk

Tottenham legend Harry Redknapp has admitted that his former side are “nowhere near” the force they looked at the peak of Mauricio Pochettino’s reign.

Pochettino took over in the summer of 2014 and it looked throughout as if his side were to contend for silverware.

However, a League Cup final defeat to Chelsea in his first season was followed up by a glorious chance to win the Premier League title in the 2015/16 season being passed up, when Spurs eventually finished third behind Leicester and Arsenal.

Tottenham then lost their FA Cup semi-final with Chelsea the following campaign, before also losing out to Liverpool in the Champions League final last term.

Since losing to the Reds in Madrid, Pochettino has been sacked and his successor Jose Mourinho is winless in six matches.

Speaking to talkSPORT about Pochettino’s reign, Redknapp admitted that Spurs should have done much better in their hunt for trophies under the Argentine.

“A couple of years ago I looked at them when they had Kyle Walker at right-back, who was absolutely flying, Danny Rose at left-back,” Redknapp said.

“You looked at that team, Christian Eriksen was playing, Mousa Dembele [too] they really did look [good]. I thought they were a Premier League winning team in the next year or two.

“I look at them now and I don’t see them anywhere near that, to be truthful.

“They have still got Harry Kane and they have still got good players but they’re nowhere near.

“They’ve got Dele Alli too but they’re nowhere near where they were – in my opinion – three or four years ago when they should have won something under Mauricio Pochettino.”

Spurs’ last game saw them dumped out of the Champions League with a 3-0 defeat to RB Leipzig at the last 16 stage.

In other news, Tottenham have reportedly been beaten by Manchester United in the hunt for a talented Sunderland academy star.
