Hart praises Sterling after defeat

City’s goalkeeper was beaten three times in the first half in Melbourne by Karim Benzema, Cristiano Ronaldo and Pepe, before Yaya Toure pulled one back for City from the penalty spot before half-time.

Manuel Pellegrini’s side improved after the break, but Hart was forced to pick the ball out of his net again after substitute Denis Cheryshev’s late close-range finish to make it 4-1.

“We didn’t play very well and we didn’t play to the pitch,” said Hart. “The pitch was big and we were a little bit disjointed. But we’ll take things away from it.

“It’s pre-season and we can’t get too wrapped up in the result. This is only our second game for quite a few of the lads and a lot of us haven’t had many minutes.

“We’re still missing the South American guys so the team is only going to get stronger. We’ll get fitter and be ready for the first game of the season. That’s the most important thing.”

Hart was, however, full of praise for new team-mate Raheem Sterling, who suffered a difficult time at the Melbourne Cricket Ground against Real following his triumphant goal-scoring debut against Roma earlier in the week.

“He (Sterling) got a bit of treatment,” said Hart. “But that’s what he’s going to get. He bounced off a few players but he keeps going.

“He’s going to be a great player for us.”
