Kai Havertz

Bayer Leverkusen sporting director Rudi Voller has confirmed Chelsea’s interest in Kai Havertz, but has warned the Blues there will be “no Covid rebate” for the midfielder.

Voller is convinced the 21-year-old is the best player Leverkusen have had – outstripping the likes of Toni Kroos and Michael Ballack.

His stats seem to back up Voller’s thinking too after managing 17 goals and nine assists in 44 games in all competitions this season.

It’s no surprise that the Germany international is in demand and Voller has confirmed Chelsea have enquired about the player.

Lampard addressed the rumours over the weekend, but refused to commit to interest in the Havertz.

Asked for the latest on Havertz, Lampard said: “I wouldn’t expect anything, I wouldn’t expect, but it’s our job to go away and see what happens, and see if we can improve.

“In a football sense I feel like I know where we can improve, so now it’s time to look at that.”

‘The best I have seen here in Leverkusen’

Voller though says Chelsea want the player, but warned them they will have to pay the asking price, rumoured to be between €80m and €100m.

“He is the best I have seen here in Leverkusen, and I have been here forever. We’ve had Emerson, Ballack, Zé Roberto, Kroos, but he outstrips them again,” he told Gazzetta Dello Sport.

“We know about the interest of some teams, especially Chelsea. But for us, the matter is reasonably straightforward.

“He still has a two-year contract. If someone accepts our conditions, that’s okay; otherwise, he stays another year, and we’re happy.

“It won’t be easy, but there’s no COVID rebate for an artist like that.”
